Tzu Chi University of Science and Technology (TCUST) was founded in 1989 by Dharma Master Cheng Yen, the founder of Tzu Chi Foundation. The foundation promotes four major missions: Charity, Medical Care, Education, and Humanity. The Master’s concept of education emphasized providing not only knowledge and skills, but also a spirit of humanitarianism. Under the spiritual guidance of the Master, TCUST is a school to cultivate in scholarly education and morality based on humanism culture so that the students become professionals who possess compassion and noble character. Courses include flower arrangement, tea ceremony and sign language performance.

◆Program Information

This course is offered to the students, staff, and faculty of our sister schools, exchange students from different organizations and our own students with aim for mutual interaction. It will be taught in English. The contents of this course include culture, service learning and humanity.

Culture is defined as the total of inherited ideas, beliefs, values, and knowledge, which constitutes the shared bases of social action. Service learning is a method through which multicultural community engagement, academic subjects, skills, and values are taught. It involves active learning and reflection. Humanity is defined as the quality or state of being human. It can be cultivated by giving example, explanation, exhortation, environment, experience, and expectation.

The program is expected to enhance the awareness of cultural difference, humanity, and service for students, with hope that they can be the seeds and influence their peers to become better persons, and help to build a better society.
