The University of the Ryukyus is located in Okinawa, the southernmost prefecture of Japan, and consists of seven faculties and eight graduate schools. Okinawa possesses unique regional characteristics that are shaped by its sub-tropical climate and its history of trade and exchange with the rest of the world during its days as the Ryukyu Kingdom. Taking advantage of its historical background and geographical characteristics, the University of the Ryukyus emphasizes education and research rooted in regional characteristics, including:
1. Coral reef production and biological resources;
2. Tropical agriculture and biotechnology;
3. Advanced medical techniques for subtropical infectious diseases;
4. Information technology centered on Okinawa’s tropical environment, energy functionality, and geographic location;
5. Okinawan history, culture, people, languages and cross-cultural studies and
6. Comprehensive research on the Asian-Pacific region.
