Akita International University (http://web.aiu.ac.jp/en/) is one of Japan’s top-ranked undergraduate institutions, and the only Japanese university that offers all courses in English. Despite being founded in 2004, AIU has established its position in Japanese education as a dynamic university that does what others can only talk about.

The small, active university community ensures that students have constant opportunities to make connections with our approximately 900 students, including over 170 international students from 190 partner universities in 49 countries and regions, as well as to join clubs, festivals, and over 200 annual trips and local community interaction events. AIU emphasizes active learning and students can make the most of our rural environment and connections to gain unique access to traditional agriculture, customs, and festivals to experience the true culture of Japan first-hand, while also gaining valuable experience in global issues such as rural rehabilitation, aging societies, and preservation of traditional arts, to name a few.

Our course offerings range from intensive, tailored Japanese courses (an average of 10 core levels per semester, plus skill-specific courses), to Japan studies, regional and international studies across a range of liberal arts disciplines, and business and economics. Since all classes are taught in English, international students have access to the full curriculum and attend class with Japanese students as well as international students from our partner universities. More than half of our professors hail from overseas and all of our degree-seeking students are required to study abroad for a year to graduate as well, which makes AIU the most diverse, international university in Japan.
