The University has 13 faculties and 13 research institutes offering a wide variety of academic programmes both in arts and sciences. UKM was ranked 43 in QS University Rankings Asia 2017/2018 and top 100 in 7 subject QS World University Ranking 2018 . UKM has also been awarded 6 star rating (Outstanding) in the Rating for Higher Education Institutions in Malaysia (SETARA) for the year 2017.

The course on Indigenous Communities of Malaysia is coordinated by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, UKM. The course introduce participants to selected topics based on continuity and change of culture of the indigenous communities in Malaysia. The course aims to: Introduce participants to the study of unique cultures of indigenous communities in Malaysia, enable participants to understand the communities' history and the process of cultural transformation, enhance participant's understanding of the various forces that confront the tradition and culture of the indigenous communities.
